In recognition of World Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20, the Center for Migration Studies (CMS) of New York has released a special edition of its Journal on Migration and Human Security, entitled The US Refugee Protection System on the 35th Anniversary of the Refugee Act of 1980: A Comprehensive Assessment of the System’s Strengths, Limitations, and Need for Reform for Reform. Shareholder Anna Gallagher and Associate Attorney Elizabeth Carlson have published an article on humanitarian protection for children fleeing to the United States from Central America and Mexico, which is included in the special edition.

Maggio Kattar has a long history of working closely with the Latino community in the United States and representing those fleeing the wars and violence in Central America since the 1980s. After the surge during the summer 2014 of unaccompanied children fleeing the gang violence in their countries and arriving at the US Southern border, Maggio Kattar attorneys worked closely with local and national attorneys, organizations and government agencies to develop pro bono projects to represent these children in immigration proceedings. Our attorneys have taken on a number of these cases. We are grateful to have been able to obtain status for all those for whom we have received final decisions and look forward to positive results in our pending cases.
